I’m okay yeah, just tired! (2021)

The intention of this piece is to invoke contrasting feelings of strength and discomfort, drawing abstract beauty from a place of suffering and misunderstanding. In my practice, I aim to explore ways to use art to normalise the expression of thoughts, feelings and emotions, using abstract techniques to draw the viewer in. The discomfort I experience in exposing my own self is something I hope to translate into the viewer, as discomfort is a crucial step towards processing acceptance.

Tim Knowles’ “Tree Drawings” series helped inspire this piece as he explored techniques that made the unseen visible using abstract mark making and the natural elements. This helped my own development of this piece by swapping the trees for my own body, and the wind for my own emotions. In doing this I am able to record and wear my own natural emotional responses in a visually empowering way.
